Satellite Connectivity in Brazil

Satellite in Brazil earns its place in three situations, and is the wrong answer everywhere else. It wins when the address has no fibre and no licensed radio path; when the site has to be live in days rather than months; and when a site that already has fibre needs a second path that shares no duct, no building entry and no ground infrastructure with the first. Outside those three, terrestrial still wins on cost per Mbps and on latency.

Where satellite actually wins

The honest version of this answer is short, because satellite is not a general-purpose replacement for fibre in Brazil. It is a specific tool for three specific problems.

What it costs you in exchange

A page that only lists advantages is a page nobody trusts. These are the trade-offs, and they are the reason we do not propose satellite where fibre is available and adequate.

The part foreign companies get stuck on

The technology is the easy half. What stops projects is commercial and local, and it is the same obstacle that stops terrestrial circuits: a service in Brazil is contracted by an entity in Brazil. Without a CNPJ, the order usually cannot even be opened, and equipment cannot be invoiced or imported to a company that does not exist locally yet.

There is also the question nobody asks until the first outage: who owns the problem. A global managed-service contract signed abroad is a contract with somebody who is not in the country. The person who has to reach the site, deal with the local operator and physically attend the antenna is a different question from who sends the invoice.

How we handle it

We contract on your behalf, so the service can be ordered and delivered before you have a Brazilian entity — the same mechanism we already use for fibre, IP transit and last mile. You get one counterpart in Brazil for every route at every site, terrestrial or satellite, with one SLA basis and one escalation path.

In practice most designs we deliver are mixed rather than pure: fibre where it exists, licensed fixed wireless where it does not, satellite where neither reaches or where the second path has to be independent of the ground. What you send us is the address list. What you get back is what exists at each one.

Questions we get asked

Can a company without a CNPJ get satellite internet in Brazil?

Not directly, in most cases: the service is contracted by a Brazilian entity, and equipment has to be invoiced or imported to a company that exists locally. Is satellite fast enough for business use in Brazil?

For most business workloads at a remote site, yes. Modern low-earth-orbit service supports voice, video, ERP access and telemetry. The constraint that catches projects is upload capacity and contention rather than the headline download figure, so sites that push imaging, video or backups need to be sized on upload.

Is satellite a real second path if the site already has fibre?

Yes, and it is one of the few genuinely diverse options. A second fibre circuit often shares the same duct and the same building entry as the first, so a single excavation takes both. A satellite path shares no ground infrastructure at all, which is why it survives the failure modes that take out terrestrial routes.

What is the realistic lead time for satellite at a site in Brazil?

Far shorter than fibre to an unserved address, which is usually the reason it is chosen. The variables are equipment availability, import and invoicing when the client has no Brazilian entity, and site work such as power, mounting and clear sky view. We quote lead time per address rather than in general, because it is the site that decides it.

Where does satellite not make sense?

At an address already served by fibre, with adequate capacity and no diversity requirement. Cost per Mbps is higher and the gap widens with capacity, so at high committed bandwidth on a served address terrestrial wins clearly. We say so rather than sell the more expensive option.
