Satellite as a Backup Path in Brazil

Most second circuits in Brazil are not diverse. They are a second invoice riding the same duct. Two suppliers does not mean two paths. In Brazil it is common for a second fibre to enter the same building through the same entry, follow the same duct down the same street and terminate in the same carrier facility. One excavation takes both, and the redundancy that was paid for every month turns out never to have existed.

A satellite path shares no duct, no building entry and no ground infrastructure with the fibre. That is what makes it diverse in the sense that matters. We design and deliver both sides — the terrestrial primary and the independent second path — as one contract with one SLA basis.

What makes a second path real

Diversity is a physical property, not a commercial one. The questions that decide it are unglamorous and they are rarely in the proposal:

Why satellite answers this cleanly

A satellite link fails for reasons that have nothing to do with the ground: weather at the site and obstruction of the sky. Those are not correlated with excavation, with a fire in a local facility, or with a regional fibre cut. That lack of correlation is the entire point, and it is why satellite backup is common precisely at the sites that can least afford to be down.

It is also why sizing the backup as a smaller pipe is usually right. A second path does not have to carry everything the primary carries. It has to carry what the operation cannot stop doing — which is normally a fraction, and is a much cheaper conversation once it is framed that way.

How the failover is designed

One counterpart for both sides

The common failure here is organisational rather than technical: the fibre is with one supplier, the backup with another, and on the night something breaks each one can demonstrate that the problem is the other one. We deliver both under one contract, one SLA basis and one escalation path, in Brazil, including for foreign companies that do not have a CNPJ yet.

Questions we get asked

Is a second fibre circuit enough for redundancy in Brazil?

Often not. A second circuit from a second supplier frequently enters the same building through the same entry, follows the same duct and terminates in the same facility, so a single excavation takes both. Diversity is a physical property of the route, not a commercial property of the invoice.

Why use satellite instead of 4G or 5G as the backup path?

Mobile backup is useful and often cheaper, but at a remote site it frequently depends on the same regional infrastructure that carries the fibre, and coverage at the site may be poor. Satellite depends on none of the ground infrastructure, which is what makes the failure modes uncorrelated.

Does the backup link need the same capacity as the primary?

Usually not, and sizing it that way is a common source of unnecessary cost. The second path has to carry what the operation cannot stop doing during an outage, which is normally a fraction of normal traffic, provided the routing policy decides in advance what moves and what waits.

How is failover triggered?

By routing rather than by a person: BGP where the client has its own addressing, SD-WAN where it does not. Detection also has to catch the link that is technically up while losing packets, because that is the failure that never triggers a simple reachability check.

Can a foreign company contract both circuits in Brazil without a CNPJ?

Yes. We contract on your behalf so both the terrestrial primary and the satellite second path can be ordered and delivered before your Brazilian entity exists, under one contract and one SLA basis.
