Telecom Infrastructure in Brazil

Brazilian infrastructure is dense in the Southeast and thin outside it. São Paulo and Rio concentrate the fibre routes, the data centres and the cable landing stations; secondary cities frequently have one viable operator, or none with fibre at your address.

How the Brazilian network is actually shaped

Three facts explain most of what you will encounter commercially. Traffic is heavily concentrated in São Paulo. A very large share of domestic traffic is exchanged at IX.br rather than bought as transit. And the gap between backbone capacity and last mile availability is wider here than in most markets.

Backbone and international routes

Moving traffic between major Brazilian cities is a solved commercial problem — multiple long-haul routes, competitive pricing. International capacity arrives through submarine systems landing on the coast, with onward connectivity concentrated at the two carrier hotels that matter for Latin America: 60 Hudson Street in New York and Equinix Miami.

IX.br changes the arithmetic

The exchange, operated by NIC.br, has locations across the country with São Paulo by far the largest. Because so many domestic eyeball networks are present, a network that joins can reach a large portion of Brazilian traffic without paying transit for it. This is why the ratio between peered and transited traffic looks different here, and why a provider quoting transit without asking about your peering plan is not paying attention.

Where it gets hard: the last mile

Coverage maps are drawn at city level; last mile is decided at street level. At a given address the set of carriers that can genuinely deliver is small, frequently one, and it is not the same set that publishes coverage there. Outside the main capitals the regional operator often owns the fiber that actually passes the building, while the national brand does not.
