What SD-WAN solves, and what it does not

SD-WAN is a software layer over the links you already have. It picks, per application and in real time, which path to use — fibre, radio, MPLS or internet — and steers away when one of them degrades. Applied well, it buys predictability without paying MPLS prices at every site.

What it does not do is create capacity or fix a bad link. If both routes are congested, choosing between them does not help. And if both run through the same duct, the software has nothing left to choose from when the backhoe arrives.

When it pays off

Many sites with different profiles. A small store on plain internet, a critical unit on a dedicated link, and the same policy applied across both.
Cloud applications. Breaking out to the cloud at the branch, instead of hauling all traffic to headquarters and back.
Replacing MPLS in part. Keep MPLS where performance has to be contractual, and use internet with SD-WAN where it does not.

When it does not

Few sites, or sites where only one viable path exists. SD-WAN needs more than one route to have anything to decide; with a single one, you bought an expensive router.

What to ask first

Who manages it: you or the carrier, and who answers when the policy behaves unexpectedly.
How internet egress works at each site, and what changes in the security model.
Whether the two paths at each site are physically diverse — that is what decides whether failover is real.
What happens to voice during a failover, which is where users notice first.
