L2 Transport in Brazil

Layer 2 transport carries your Ethernet frames between two points without touching routing — the sites behave as one network and you keep control of the addressing. Typical capacities run from 100 Mbps to 10 Gbps and above, quoted per route.

It is the right choice for replication, clustering and live migration. Where routing should belong to the carrier instead, MPLS is the fit.

What layer 2 transport gives you

A layer 2 circuit carries Ethernet frames between two points and does nothing else to them. No routing, no address translation, no interference: what you put in one end comes out the other. The two sites behave as if a very long cable ran between them.

That transparency is the whole product. It means your VLANs cross intact, your addressing is yours, and the routing decisions stay in your equipment rather than the carrier's. Applications that assume the two ends are on the same network — storage replication, clustering, live migration — need this and will not work properly over a routed service.

The shapes it comes in

Point-to-point

One circuit, two ends. The common case: two data centers, or a data center and an office.

Multipoint

Several sites on one Ethernet service, any of them able to reach any other. Simpler than a mesh of point-to-point circuits once you pass three or four sites.

VLAN-tagged delivery

Several logical circuits over one physical port, separated by tag. Useful when one site needs distinct paths — production, backup, management — without three separate installations.

What should you specify?

Layer 2 or MPLS?

Layer 2 when you want the network to stay out of the way and keep the routing yourself. MPLS — a routed layer 3 service — when you have many sites and would rather the carrier handle reachability between them. Many networks end up with both: layer 2 between the data centers, layer 3 out to the branches.
