IP Transit Pricing in Brazil

IP transit in Brazil is priced per Mbps of committed bandwidth, billed on the 95th percentile, and the rate moves with the city, the port speed and the delivery method — which is why there is no honest public rate card. We quote per route.

Two things reduce the bill more reliably than negotiating the rate: peering at IX.br for the domestic share of your traffic, and sizing the commit to the real 95th percentile rather than the peak.

Why nobody publishes a price list

IP transit does not have a menu price the way a broadband plan does, and any provider showing you one before knowing your volume and your address is showing you a number they intend to revise. The cost is assembled from a handful of variables, and it is worth knowing which ones you can move.

What actually moves the number

Committed volume. The single largest factor. Price per megabit falls steeply with commit, which is why aggregating your traffic into one contract usually beats splitting it.
Location. São Paulo is the cheapest place in Brazil to buy transit, because that is where the networks and the exchange density are. The same commit in a northern capital costs more, and the gap is not small.
The circuit to get there. Transit is priced separately from the last mile that carries it. Two quotes with the same per-megabit rate can differ enormously once the access circuit is included.
Contract term. Twelve, twenty-four and thirty-six months are the usual steps, and the discount between them is real.
Your peering plan. Traffic you exchange at IX.br is traffic you are not paying transit for. A serious peering strategy changes what you need to commit, and therefore the price.
Burst behaviour. If your traffic is spiky, the 95th percentile treats you kindly; if it is flat and high, a committed rate is usually cheaper.

The costs that get forgotten

Cross-connect fees inside the data center, billed monthly and separately.
Installation and, where fiber has to be built, civil works — which can dwarf the recurring cost.
Equipment capable of the full table, if you do not already have it.
IPv4 addressing, which in Brazil as everywhere else is scarce and no longer free.

How to compare two quotes honestly

Put both on the same basis: same commit, same term, same port, access circuit included or excluded in both, and the SLA compared clause by clause rather than by headline percentage. A cheaper per-megabit rate attached to a weaker repair commitment is not cheaper, it is a different product.
