Direct Peering vs IX.br

IX.br gives you many networks over one port and one BGP session set; direct peering gives you a dedicated path to one network. For most entrants IX.br comes first, because it reaches the largest share of Brazilian eyeball traffic for the least effort.

Direct peering earns its place later, when a single destination carries enough traffic that capacity, latency or predictability justify a dedicated circuit.

Two ways to exchange traffic without paying transit

Peering is the arrangement where two networks hand each other traffic directly instead of paying an upstream to carry it. There are two shapes it takes, and in Brazil the choice between them is unusually consequential because of how much traffic sits behind one exchange.

Public peering at IX.br

IX.br is the internet exchange operated by NIC.br, with locations across the country and São Paulo as by far the largest. You take a port on the exchange fabric and, from that single port, you can establish sessions with many networks at once — usually through the exchange route servers, which turn hundreds of potential sessions into one or two.

Private interconnect

A dedicated circuit or cross-connect between you and one specific network. More work per relationship, and worth it when the volume with that one network is large enough that you want a committed, predictable path rather than a shared fabric.

How to decide

Start at the exchange. It is cheaper, faster to set up, and covers the long tail of networks that will never justify their own circuit. Then look at your traffic matrix: if one or two networks account for a large share of your volume, those are the candidates for private interconnect, and nothing else is.

Neither replaces transit. Peering reaches the networks you peer with; the rest of the internet still has to come from an upstream. What peering changes is how much transit you need to commit to, which is where the money actually moves.
