What healthcare connectivity has to survive

A hospital or a diagnostic network does not fail gracefully. Imaging moves in bursts that saturate a link designed for averages, the electronic record has to answer at the bedside, and a teleconsultation that freezes is a clinical event, not an IT ticket.

The consequence is that healthcare networks are usually specified around the worst hour of the month rather than the average, and around what happens when a link is cut rather than when it is working.

The traffic that sets the requirement

• Imaging. A CT or MRI study is large and it moves all at once. If studies are sent to a remote reporting service, upload capacity is the constraint, not download.
• Electronic records across units. Every unit reading and writing to the same system means latency between sites becomes clinical response time.
• Telemedicine. Symmetric, jitter-sensitive, and unforgiving of packet loss.
• Everything else. Administration, guest Wi-Fi and connected devices, which should not be competing with any of the above for the same capacity.

What to put in the design

• A physically diverse second path. Not a second invoice from a second supplier — a different duct and a different building entry. In Brazil this frequently means fiber plus licensed fixed wireless, because a second fiber route often does not exist.
• Traffic separation. Clinical systems, imaging and guest access on separate classes, so that a visitor streaming video cannot slow a study transfer.
• A repair commitment, not just availability. Ask what the contract says happens if a unit is down for six hours, and whether credits are automatic.
• Consistency across units. Twelve clinics with twelve different carriers means twelve different SLAs and twelve escalation paths on the night something breaks.

Why the multi-unit case is different

No single Brazilian carrier serves every address well. A network of clinics across more than one state almost always ends up built from more than one underlying carrier — which is fine, provided one party owns the design, the handoffs and the escalation. That is the part that is normally missing when each unit was contracted locally over the years.
